People have attempted (and died) in their search for this gold
This seems like something out of a story, yet it really occurred. In 1850, English botanist Richard Spruce went on a gold search and claimed to have discovered a guide and map. Barth Blake, an adventurer, was the final person to attempt to recover the riches a few decades later, in 1886.
He stated in his letters that he discovered the gold and took just what he could. The single item went missing on the way to New York and has not been seen or heard from since. Perhaps he intended it that way, or perhaps the gold was cursed.
