The Real Towns Behind America’s Most Beloved Films and TV Shows

July 12, 2026 by Agustin Catania

#10: Mansfield, Ohio as the Haunting Home of The Shawshank Redemption (The Shawshank Redemption, 1994)

The towering Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield became one of the defining visual elements of The Shawshank Redemption. Its imposing Gothic architecture immediately conveyed isolation, hopelessness, and institutional power before a single line of dialogue was spoken. The prison’s authentic appearance eliminated the need for elaborate set construction while adding genuine historical weight to the story. Throughout the film, its massive corridors and stone walls reinforce the emotional burden carried by Andy Dufresne and Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding. Today, the building welcomes visitors as both a museum and a popular filming location.
