#8: Woodstock, Illinois as Punxsutawney in Groundhog Day (Groundhog Day, 1993)
Although Groundhog Day is set in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, nearly all of its memorable downtown scenes were filmed in Woodstock, Illinois. The town’s historic square, elegant courthouse, and walkable streets provided exactly the timeless atmosphere needed for a story built around repetition. Because Phil Connors revisits the same places countless times, Woodstock’s distinctive layout became instantly familiar to audiences. The community has fully embraced its cinematic identity by hosting annual celebrations inspired by the film. Visitors can still stand on the exact sidewalk where Bill Murray famously stepped into the icy puddle.
