Despite taking place in fictional Haddonfield, Illinois, John Carpenter’s Halloween relied heavily on Pasadena to create its unforgettable suburban setting. Production crews carefully scattered artificial autumn leaves throughout neighborhoods to disguise Southern California’s climate and recreate a Midwestern fall. The quiet residential streets and familiar family homes made Michael Myers’ attacks feel disturbingly believable because they resembled neighborhoods audiences recognized. This everyday environment became one of the film’s greatest sources of suspense.
