The Scapegoats’ History Got Wrong

July 3, 2026 by Luzy Torrealba

Although History loves a hero, it has an even stranger habit of blaming the wrong person. Across the centuries, people who challenged authority, exposed uncomfortable truths, or merely refused to play by the rules often became the easiest targets. Many lost their freedom, their reputations, or even their lives while the real problems went unquestioned. Thankfully, history has a way of revisiting its biggest mistakes, even if the apology arrives a few centuries late. Keep reading to meet the people who spent years carrying blame they never deserved.

#1: Galileo Galilei (February 15, 1564 – January 8, 1642)

Galileo Galilei revolutionized astronomy after improving the telescope in 1609 and using it to observe Jupiter’s four largest moons, the phases of Venus, and the Moon’s mountains. Those discoveries supported the Sun-centered model proposed by Nicolaus Copernicus. However, the Church considered his conclusions to be contrary to the scriptures. In 1633, Galileo stood before the Roman Inquisition, where he was found guilty of “vehement suspicion of heresy.” He spent the rest of his life confined to his home near Florence.
