#2: Alfred Dreyfus (October 9, 1859 – July 12, 1935)
Alfred Dreyfus served as an artillery officer in the French Army when, in 1894, military officials accused him of passing confidential documents to Germany. The evidence relied on weak handwriting comparisons and secret files that his defense never had a chance to challenge. Much of the public accepted the accusation due to the strong antisemitism in France. After years of public debate, investigations uncovered that another officer was responsible. Dreyfus returned to the army in 1906 after his conviction was overturned.
