#15: The Mystery of the Altar Stone
For years, the Altar Stone was often linked to Wales, but recent research has rewritten that story. A 2024 Nature study found that the stone’s mineral age and chemistry point to a source in northeast Scotland, not Wales. UCL summarized the finding as showing that Stonehenge’s largest bluestone came from northern Scotland. That is a stunning transport story, around 700 kilometers by some estimates, and a reminder that Stonehenge research is still moving.
