#1: Why Light Switches Flip Up in the U.S. but Down in the UK
In the United States, “up” means on largely due to early electrical safety conventions and gravity-based mechanisms. Switches were designed so that if internal components loosened, gravity would pull them down into the off position. In the UK, many switches are installed in the opposite orientation simply due to different manufacturing standards that became normalized over time. It is less about right or wrong and more about which standard took hold first.
