#11: Why Early Bedrooms Had No Closets  

Many early American homes lacked built-in closets because property taxes were partially based on the number of rooms. Closets were sometimes counted as additional rooms, increasing tax costs. As a result, people relied on freestanding wardrobes instead. Built-in closets became standard only after tax rules changed.
