#12: They Were Not One United Empire
The Vikings were not a single nation marching under one Scandinavian logo. Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, and Norse settlements had shifting leaders, rival families, local loyalties, and constant competition. “The Vikings” is convenient shorthand for a messy network of people and places. They were not Team Scandinavia. They were more like a cold, armed family reunion with boats.
