Surprisingly, this was fairly common among certain communities. People thought Harry Potter contained black magic, was evil, satanic, etc. Even where I grew up, it was strongly discouraged (and that was already after I had read the first couple of books).

I was never forcibly told not to read it, only encouraged not to. Because of that, I didn’t finish the series until I was a teenager. It’s a little odd that such a scare started around Harry Potter. Of all things, I would think of a lot of children’s books; it’s one of the most harmless. It inspires imagination, that’s it.
