#2: Garbage Plate — New York
The name alone might make you pause, but in Rochester, New York, it’s a beloved local tradition that started in 1918. A Garbage Plate is a huge pile of food, perfect after a late night out. You start with a base of two sides, usually home fries and macaroni salad. On top of that go two meats, like cheeseburgers or hot dogs. The whole thing is then smothered in a signature meat hot sauce. It’s not pretty, but it’s a satisfying meal that you’ll have a hard time finding outside of upstate New York.
