#7: Loco Moco — Hawaii
Forget what you think you know about Hawaiian food. The Loco Moco is a hearty, modern dish that’s pure island comfort. It was created in 1949 at a restaurant in Hilo for some hungry local teenagers. They wanted something cheap that would fill them up, and the owners came up with this simple masterpiece. A scoop of white rice is topped with a hamburger patty, smothered in brown gravy, and crowned with a fried egg. The name came from the kids themselves, who thought “loco” sounded right for this “crazy” good meal.
