#21: Salote Tupou III of Tonga – 18 years old
Salote Tupou III became Queen of Tonga in 1918 at 18, succeeding her father, George Tupou II. She became one of the country’s most important and beloved modern rulers. During her long reign, Salote worked to preserve Tongan traditions while advocating for education, public health, and women’s rights. She also became an international figure after attending the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in London, where her warm, dignified presence during a rainy procession captured public attention. Known for her imposing height and commanding presence, Salote remained on the throne for nearly 48 years, shaping modern Tonga until her passing in 1965.
