#9: Mary of Hungary – About 10 years old
Mary became the official queen of Hungary in 1382 after her father, Louis I, died. She was only about 10 or 11. Her mother, Elizabeth of Bosnia, held the real power as regent, but ruling a medieval kingdom was never easy. Nobles and rival family members challenged Mary’s claim to the throne. The situation was complicated and dangerous. To secure her position, the regency arranged a marriage to Sigismund of Luxembourg. They ruled together until 1395, when Mary’s reign came to a tragic end after she died in a horse-riding accident.
