#9: Polio Scare and Iron Lungs

Most people who were kids in the 1950s remember when the polio vaccine was first issued. Before widespread and mandated vaccination, however, many hospitals still had the iron lung machines present, an antiquated ventilator needed to keep alive victims of the Polio virus. The widespread panic from this disease was felt most keenly by parents, as the virus particularly affected children. Who remembers getting that sugar cube vaccine when they were just a wee little tot?
