#13: Monterey Pop Created Instant Superstars
The Monterey International Pop Festival, held June 16 through 18, became the Summer of Love’s great musical showcase. Jimi Hendrix stunned American audiences with his theatrical guitar performance, Janis Joplin emerged as a major star, and Otis Redding reached a broader pop audience. The festival also featured the Who, Jefferson Airplane, and many others. Its polished organization helped export the San Francisco counterculture worldwide, even as conditions back in Haight-Ashbury were becoming increasingly chaotic then.
