#9: Harder Sustances Changed the Street
Psychedelics dominated the Summer of Love image, but by late 1967 the street scene increasingly included predatory dealing. Overcrowding attracted criminals who saw vulnerable newcomers rather than spiritual seekers. Bad trips, illness, robbery, and violence strained volunteer organizations. Veterans of the earlier Haight often said the neighborhood’s cooperative atmosphere had already vanished.
