For many of us, a love of junk food was part of growing up; from pining for Pringles to yearning for Yoohoo, we had all sorts of cravings (with sugar at the center). While we might have viewed junk food as the foundation of our diet (reasoning we could get our minerals and nutrients from Flintstone Vitamins), our parents had other ideas, often stocking the refrigerator with oranges, celery, cottage cheese, skim milk, and yogurt. This left us with little choice but to get our fixes elsewhere. In fact, there are several foods we had to enjoy at our friends’ houses, including these 22 tasty treats:
#1: Pop-Tarts (Frosted, of course)
Pop-Tarts might have had the nutritional value of a cardboard box, but that didn’t mean they weren’t delicious! A toaster pastry that could also be enjoyed cold, these soft-yet-crunchy breakfast goodies were invented in the 1960s before becoming a pantry staple in the 1980s. Buddying up to all kinds of taste buds, they came in tons of flavors, including strawberry, blueberry, chocolate chip, apple currant, brown sugar, fudge, s’mores, and raspberry. Over the years, Kellogg’s has added more and more varieties.
