#18: All the Way — Celine Dion
Cahn and Van Heusen wrote this for the 1957 film The Joker Is Wild, where Sinatra performed it and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Dion’s recording applied her signature cinematic scale to a song that Sinatra had performed with intimate warmth. The modern production gave it a grandeur that moved it away from the cocktail lounge and toward the film score, which is either an expansion of the song’s emotional range or an overcorrection depending on your relationship to restraint as a vocal value.
