#8: One for My Baby — Iggy Pop
Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer wrote this for Fred Astaire in 1943, but Sinatra’s 1958 recording for Only the Lonely is the one that made it the definitive late-night saloon song. Pop performed a version live in 1979 that appeared decades later as a bonus track on the deluxe remaster of his Party album. The performance was recorded with minimal accompaniment and played with complete seriousness. Pop’s voice, considerably deeper than most people expect from him, gave the lyric a weariness that was entirely his own and entirely earned.
