This next one makes me sad. It is a good and admirable and much-needed thing to be the sort of person who is willing to help people out when they are in a difficult spot. I don’t in any way want to discourage people from being charitable and compassionate to those around them.

But falling easily for a sob story where the person might not have the most honorable intentions isn’t a great thing, because now it’s like you have a target on your back—the next person with a sob story and dishonorable intentions may quickly figure out that you’re an easy mark.
