#10: NASA Lost a Mars Probe Because of Metric Confusion

In 1999, NASA’s Mars Climate Orbiter was destroyed because one engineering team used metric measurements while another used English units. The spacecraft entered Mars’ atmosphere at the wrong angle and vanished. Later that year, the Mars Polar Lander also failed. Together, the accidents embarrassed NASA during its cheaper and faster mission era.
