#17: MTBE Solved One Pollution Problem but Created Another
Gasoline additive MTBE became popular in the late 1970s because it reduced air pollution from vehicles. Unfortunately, the chemical easily leaked into groundwater from underground fuel tanks. By the 1990s, contaminated drinking water became a major issue in places like California. Governments eventually moved to phase out the additive despite cleanup difficulties.
