The Iridium satellite phone system launched in the 1990s with dreams of providing global communication coverage. The project cost billions and required dozens of satellites. Unfortunately, the phones were bulky, expensive, and unreliable indoors. Most consumers had little interest in paying high prices for worldwide calling, and the company collapsed into bankruptcy in 1999.
