#4: Nuclear Winter Predictions Were Later Reduced
In 1983, astronomer Carl Sagan helped popularize the idea that nuclear war would create a devastating “nuclear winter.” Early models predicted worldwide freezing temperatures and mass starvation. Later studies showed the original estimates were too extreme. Scientists eventually concluded the effects would still be terrible, but likely less catastrophic than first feared.
