#15: Stanislav Petrov’s Decision During the 1983 Nuclear False Alarm
In September 1983, Soviet warning systems reported incoming American nuclear missiles. Duty officer Stanislav Petrov doubted the alerts because only a handful of missiles appeared on screens. Ignoring protocol, he judged the warning to be false. He was correct, as sunlight reflecting off clouds had fooled the detection systems.
