#8: The Bonilla Observation and the Comet Fragments of 1883
In August 1883, astronomer Jose Bonilla observed hundreds of dark objects crossing the Sun while studying from Mexico. Scientists later concluded they were fragments of a massive comet that had broken apart near Earth. Many pieces passed surprisingly close to the planet, and impacts from several could have caused global devastation.
