The Streltsy were a hereditary elite corps of firearm infantry in Russia who guarded the royal family and the Kremlin. In 1698, the young Peter the Great traveled around Western Europe to learn modern technology. While the czar was out of town, his protectors planned a massive armed revolt to destroy his progressive government. Peter was furious and personally executed more than 1,200 guards.
