Thinking about flying with a toddler? Already questioning your sanity (and that of the people around you?) Well, stop right there. Families fly with toddlers every single day. Yes, it might be more challenging, but it’s not at all impossible and not nearly as scary as you might think. Opting to fly with a little one just takes a little more thought and planning. We’re here to help you take a little of the guesswork out of the process.
- Opt for a direct flight or one with a long layover. While there are pros and cons to both flight options; a direct flight means you get to your destination quicker, but this can mean you’re on the plane for a long stretch of time. If you choose a flight with a layover, make sure you have ample time to use the bathroom, grab a bite to eat, stretch your legs, let your little one tire out a little, etc. We suggest a 2 – 3 hour layer to avoid running all over an airport with a little one, a diaper bag, luggage, and what’s left of your sanity.
- Arrive at the airport early. (Dads everywhere rejoice) Arriving at the airport early will be much easier on the whole family since you won’t be rushing to get to your gate.
- Break for the bathroom before you board. The last thing you want to do is board the plane and hear your toddler exclaim they need to use the bathroom, or worse, you feel the dreaded leak. Make sure to hit the bathroom before you board whether it’s for one last diaper change or simply just to “try”.
- Don’t fly too late in the day. Flying too late in the day with a toddler that hasn’t had a nap can be a huge gamble. Try to book your flight for the morning, or if you have to fly later in the day, make sure your little one gets a nice long nap prior to boarding.
- Consider buying a seat for your kiddo. Odds are your toddler is going to spend most of his or her time on your lap, but having the extra seat will give your family a little more room to spread out during the flight.
- Be okay with a little extra screen time. We totally understand limiting screen time on a normal day, but rules are different during travel. If a little bit of extra screen time is going to ensure a relaxing flight, we say go for it.
- Double down on the essentials. Pack double the diapers, wipes, food, everything for your travels. Every parent’s worst nightmare is discovering they’ve run out of something that their kiddo needs in the moment, so make sure you’ve packed more than enough of the necessities.
- Pack extra clothes. For everyone. Let’s face it, accidents happen. Now, we won’t go into the many accidents that would involve a wardrobe change, but we can all agree it will be better to have them and not need them, than to need them and not have them.
- Protect little ears. Altitude changes and ear popping can be hard on sensitive ears. Snacks or a bottle are a great way to keep pressure and pain at bay.
- Ignore the Negative Nancy’s. Traveling stresses everyone out and sometimes people are just in negative moods; to the point that any little cry or whimper can entice someone to throw you a nasty look. Pay no attention to them. Flights don’t last forever and soon enough you’ll be back on the ground, ready to explore. In the meantime, do what you need to do to keep your baby entertained and as happy as possible.
