#15: I Dream of Jeannie
An iconic piece of midcentury television media and pop cultre, I Dream of Jeannie is a show a lot of people have watched back in the day. Even if you haven’t seen Barbara Eden’s whole series as Jeannie, you at least know of the genie character who bobs her head and grants wishes.
The five-season series resulted in two TV movies and an animated series. Unsurprisingly, the show, which began in 1965, is rife with stereotypes and harmful depictions of other cultures—particularly of Islamic countries. Jeannie, in her revealing outfit, was also subservient to Tony, who was her master and the holder of her lamp.
