#9: Dieter Dengler’s Jungle Escape — 1966
U.S. Navy pilot Dieter Dengler was shot down over Laos during the Vietnam War and captured by Pathet Lao forces. After enduring months of imprisonment, starvation, and abuse, Dengler and several fellow prisoners escaped their jungle camp in June 1966. The group soon separated amid chaos. Dengler survived alone through monsoon conditions, hunger, leeches, and exhaustion until an American aircraft spotted him. His ordeal later inspired Werner Herzog’s documentary Little Dieter Needs to Fly and the film Rescue Dawn.
