Scientists need to conduct decades of research before they have a chance of knowing the natural history of our planet, but melting glaciers in Greenland provided a significant clue. Typically meteor impacts are rare to discover because the hundreds of thousands and even millions of years of erosion leave few traces.

NASA first reported on the discovery, which followed another meteor impact discovered less than two hundred miles away. While scientists are still working to determine the crater’s cause, a collapsed volcano would be the only other likely explanation.
