52. Wildfires In Antarctica
In 2016, scientists received a grant to conduct research in some of the ice-free parts of Alaska, and what they found helped shape the current picture of natural history. Scientists found evidence of ash collections in ancient lakes and rivers buried underneath layers of rocks.

From this evidence, scientists hypothesized that Antarctica experienced periods of intense wildfires during extreme warming periods. The idea of wildfires in the arctic makes sense given the preserved evidence of lush vegetation on the continent.
