56. George Mallory
George Mallory was one of the first British mountaineers to climb Mount Everest on three separate occasions. Mallory was a veteran of the first world war and taught in a classroom by trade. However, he developed a passion for climbing, and many people in his close circle regarded him as a world-class mountaineer.

With the first two trips failing, many historical accounts paint Mallory as a man uncertain whether he would return home from his third attempt to climb Everest. A heroic figure in England, Mallory’s death remained a mystery until an expedition crew found his body near the top of the summit, where they believe the hiker died after a steep fall.
