#16: Gary Greff Built the Enchanted Highway to Help Save His Town — Project Began: 1990
Gary Greff conceived the Enchanted Highway as a way to attract travelers toward the declining community of Regent, North Dakota. Beginning around 1990, he created enormous scrap-metal sculptures and installed them along a rural stretch of road extending south from Interstate 94. His earliest major installation, the Tin Family, was completed in 1991 using repurposed industrial and agricultural materials. Later works depicted grasshoppers, pheasants, deer, fishermen, and enormous geese visible from considerable distances across the open prairie. Greff handled much of the welding, painting, installation, and continuing maintenance while pursuing his broader plan to revive local tourism.
