#17: Frank Stoeber Turned Loose Farm Twine Into a Roadside Attraction — Project Began: 1953
Kansas farmer Frank Stoeber began rolling discarded sisal twine into a ball on Christmas Eve in 1953. The project started as a practical way to collect loose material scattered across his barn rather than as a planned tourist attraction. He continued adding twine until the ball became so large that neighbors and other local farmers began contributing material of their own. As its diameter and weight increased, the unusual creation attracted visitors who appreciated the simplicity of its origin. The ball was eventually moved to Cawker City, where community members continued the tradition through organized annual additions.
