#17: The Edinburgh Recovered Soviet Gold From the Arctic Sea
The British cruiser HMS Edinburgh sank in 1942 after suffering heavy wartime damage while escorting Arctic convoys. It carried Soviet gold bullion intended as payment for Allied war supplies. A difficult salvage operation in the 1980s recovered most of the gold, making it one of the greatest deep-sea recoveries of the twentieth century.
