#4: The S.S. Republic Preserved Thousands of Civil War Era Coins
The S.S. Republic sank in 1865 during a hurricane off Georgia while carrying gold and silver coins after the American Civil War. Odyssey Marine Exploration located the wreck in 2003 and recovered more than 51,000 coins plus thousands of artifacts. The collection is valued between $120 million and $180 million.
