Bump Bump Bump
You probably don’t recall the days when people had to physically pick up their suitcases by the strength of their muscles in the air. I realize this may sound implausible, but it’s true. Suitcases on wheels and trolley bags are relatively new inventions, having been first patented in 1972 by Bernard Sadow, founder of the US Luggage Company. He was able to sell his concept – which sounded rather stupid at first – to Macy’s Department Stores.
We credit Mr. Sadow with the wheeled suitcase today. Still, there is evidence that he was preceded by other individuals (such as Alfred Joseph Krupa, a Polish/Croatian artist) who conceived and developed the device without patenting it. A wheeled suitcase is an excellent invention, but having to push it over rough pavement can be inconvenient. If your holiday destination is in Europe, you’ll be rolling your bag across many cobblestoned lanes and lovely yet rather bumpy squares.
