Vivandiere
During the time of war, women who served alongside the army were called “vivandieres.” These ladies supported the troops, taking care of wounded soldiers, preparing meals, transporting water, and more.
Vivandieres were probably just as important as maids in terms of their jobs, yet even today, they are greatly revered and remembered. Before World War I, the French War Ministry prohibited the vivandiere profession.
