Herb Strewer
Most of London’s human waste ended up in the River Thames before the invention of modern sewage systems. This meant the 17th century London was a filthy city; the metropolis was also generally unclean.
This is where the Herb Strewers came in. These individuals dispersed herbs and flowers around royal family homes and other important structures to prevent unpleasant scents from developing. They also worked at royal gatherings, carrying herb baskets and donning elegant costumes.
