Hush Shopkeepers
Many people still went out of their way in order to enjoy a nice drink at the end of the day, even during Prohibition. People utilized “hush merchants,” who illicitly sold alcoholic beverages behind the scenes and without authority.
Shopkeepers in this area kept their customers happy while attempting to avoid being discovered by the cops by offering them what they wanted. Because these shopkeepers were so popular, the pay was well worth the effort for many of them.
