Georgia – Future Secretary’s Portrait
Many individuals supported Georgia throughout its early days, when it transformed into the state it is now. Howell Cobb was one of these people. This image was taken before he became Governor and US Treasury Secretary in 1844.
He was also the state’s representative at the time of the painting. Cobb served as Treasury Secretary for five terms and governor for two years. He ultimately went down in history on the wrong side, however, because he was one of the main founding members of the Confederation.
