Iowa – George Wallace’s Portrait
This photo depicts George Wallace Jones, who was photographed in 1844. Jones was an important figure in the state at the time, serving as a business innovator, attorney, and judge and addressing Iowa as a senator.
Following being arrested and held for 34 days because of concerns about Confederate sympathies, he spent time in jail during the Civil War. He was also known to enslave people, although he never went to trial. He was never tried but was shortly released after his arrest, making the most of his retirement.
