Oklahoma – A Cherokee Chief
Joss Ross, better known as Guwisguwi, was a prominent Cherokee leader who held a high position owing to his blood relationship with the powerful tribe. He led his people to some of the most frightening and terrifying experiences during the Civil War while serving as a chief.
Unfortunately, he was also their leader during a few tribe migrations. He had grand ambitions of establishing Ross’ Landing and Chattanooga, Tennessee’s initial settlement. This photograph of him in Western clothing was taken in 1850.
