Minnesota – Azayamankawin Or “Old Betsey”
Azayamankawin had a few monikers. She was a Mdewakanton Dakota woman who had her portrait taken while she was old and was known as “Old Betsey” and “Old Bets.” Her name means “berry picker.” She was extremely popular in her neighborhood, particularly during the Dakota War.
She became one of the most renowned and sought-after local healers after her patients began sending injured troops to her from all sides of the conflict. As photography was still prohibitively expensive at this time, she is shown in a snapshot taken around 1865 with her eyes closed and hands folded in prayer. Although Taopi’s participation in the war was significant, he was acknowledged not to have fought.
