Even children’s textbooks pushed society’s agenda that women were better suited as homemakers and men were better suited for the challenges of the workforce. Men were often depicted as scientists, doctors, or adventurers, while women held their status as assistants or housewives. This seemingly subtle messaging reinforced both genders’ limitations in the 1950s.
