Girls might not have been pushed as much as boys were to join debate teams where speech and articulation muscles were strengthened. Assertiveness, in general, was seen as a boy’s trait, where girls were more likely to receive guidance toward politeness. This limited girls’ opportunities to develop persuasive speaking abilities, a great skill for navigating many of life’s challenges.
