When Psycho arrived in 1960, it did not behave like a respectable Hollywood thriller. It killed its apparent heroine early, made audiences wait outside until showtime, turned a motel shower into a murder machine, and suggested that the monster might not live in a castle but in the nervous young man handing you a room key. Alfred Hitchcock’s film did not merely shock viewers. It rewired how movies could be marketed, edited, scored, censored, and feared.

#1: The Mid-Movie Protagonist Execution

Killing Marion Crane about a third of the way into the film was a narrative earthquake. Janet Leigh was the recognizable star, the emotional center, and the person audiences assumed they were following. Then the movie simply removed her. That move broke a basic contract between Hollywood and the viewer: the star is safe, or at least safe until the climax. After Psycho, audiences learned to distrust comfort. Suddenly, anyone could go.
